Ski patroller dies after incident at Tahoe Heavenly Mountain resort

The individual was found unconscious in the Mott Canyon area of the resort, a black diamond trail.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Another person has died at a Tahoe ski resort this weekend, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

On Jan 18., the sheriff's office was told about a man found unconscious in the Mott Canyon area of Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe.

Officials identified the man as Christopher John Nicholson, 36 and a member of Heavenly Ski Patrol.

Officials said Nicholson was working that day in Mott Canyon, a black diamond run and expert-level trail. He was pronounced dead after being flown to Carson Valley Medical Center.

No cause of death has been identified at this time, though The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and Washoe County Coroner’s Office are working diligently to determine that information.

Nicholson's death is the second ski-related death to occur this past weekend, the other being that of Cole Comstock of Blairsden, CA. Comstock was skiing at Alpine Meadows Ski Resort near Lake Tahoe on Friday morning when he was trapped by an avalanche. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Another male skier suffered severe lower body injuries during the Alpine Meadows incident and was taken to a hospital. There have been no updates as of yet on his condition.
