Meadowview Farmer's Market receiving $500,000 for future launch in Sacramento

Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang said she expected the funds for a future Meadowview Farmer's Market to arrive sometime in 2024.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Funding for a future Meadowview Farmer's Market in South Sacramento arrived and is set for approval by the Sacramento City Council on Tuesday.

The California Department of Food and Agriculture awarded the city with $500,000 for the farmer's market and city officials plan to also establish a grant project.

City Councilmember Mai Vang represents the Meadowview area and told ABC10 in November 2023 she expected for the funding to come in 2024.

"(We) also want to support an operator that can ensure smooth operations. I think it's really important that sustainability is key," Vang said. "Mayors and councilmembers come and go, but what remains is the community, sustainability is really important to me and making sure we have a solid operator that knows what their doing."

Meadowview community leader Mikaili Kamau said he'd like to see a member of the community hired as farmers market operator.

"Let's not waste money and the opportunity to have a regular Meadowview farmers market by following the routine practice of endless planning and parades of consultants," he said. "This market should be planned, initiated and operated by Meadowview neighbors and volunteers."
