South Sacramento's Meadowview sculpture resurrected after adaptation for strong winds

The Meadowview community kinetic art sculpture previously toppled by strong winds is now designed to withstand such forces, a Sacramento city arts official said.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The kinetic art sculpture in Sacramento's Meadowview community is back in front of Pannell Community Center after strong winds toppled it multiple times since being installed in 2022.

The sculpture's resurrection wrapped up before the end of April to meet a deadline set by Councilmember Mai Vang, according to Sacramento Art in Public Places manager Donald Gensler.

Vang told ABC10 the presence of art is important to Meadowview residents.

"Art possesses the unique ability to uplift and transform communities, especially in neighborhoods like Meadowview. Installing artwork that reflects our community not only adds beauty to our surroundings but also creates a profound sense of pride and belonging. We look forward to bringing more diverse and inclusive public art projects to South Sacramento," she said.

South Sacramento resident Margarita Chavez says she's concerned about the kinetic sculpture failing again due to winds.

Gensler says the recently resurrected sculpture is slightly different from the previous one.

"It looks great. The artist had to slightly simplify the mechanical aspect so that it would be strong in the wind," he said. "We were concerned initially about the design but this design has very much been checked and rechecked."

He says — despite the changes — the sculpture still conveys ideas interesting to the artist like water and land.

Meadowview resident Mikaili Kamau has documented the sculpture since its inception. He says the art installation has been up for a few weeks and appears to be moving in the wind as intended.

"I'm glad it hasn't fallen down," he said. "We got a lot of wind today so it's looking pretty good. The kinetic sculpture was long overdue and I hope it stays up forever."
