Drowning death of Stanislaus County 2-year-old appears to be accident, deputies say

The child was found in a canal by family and friends five minutes after being reported missing.

DENAIR, Calif. — The drowning death of a two-year-old boy in Denair appears to be a tragic accident, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded around 6:20 p.m. Monday after the two-year-old was reported missing along the 4300 block of Swanson Road. He was found by family and friends minutes later in a canal nearly a half-mile from home.

According to the sheriff's office, the child was pulled from the water and taken to the road for CPR while awaiting medical help. First responders took over and transported the child to the hospital.

The child was in critical condition for hours until he died just after 10:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office said the boy appeared to have drowned. An autopsy showed water in his lungs.

"Though current evidence suggests this to be a tragic accident, law enforcement will complete a thorough investigation. Family has and continues to cooperate with investigators," the sheriff's office said in a news release.
