Amazon shutting down California drone delivery site

Lockeford was home to Amazon's only drone delivery site in California.

SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. — Amazon is ending its Prime Air drone delivery service in California.

The technology company announced Monday the site in Lockeford is closing.

"We'll offer all current employees opportunities at other sites, and will continue to serve customers in Lockeford with other delivery methods," Amazon wrote in a news release.

Lockeford was home to Amazon's only Califoria site part of the program. It's unclear when exactly the delivery site will close.

When the program began in 2022, residents in Lockeford could place an order for 'Prime-Air eligible items' as they normally would an Amazon order. Then a drone would fly to the designated delivery location, hover over the customer's backyard and then safely release the package.

In the announcement of the Lockeford closure, Amazon said it could be adding a new location for drone deliveries in Tolleson, Arizona. Amazon said it would continue the program in College Station, Texas, which launched at the same time as the site in San Joaquin County.

Amazon said it will open more U.S. drone delivery sites in 2025.
