Stockton man killed in Tracy crash after pulling over to help other vehicle

There was a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder and another vehicle pulled over in front of it to help.

TRACY, Calif. — A Stockton man was killed in a crash in Tracy Thursday after pulling over to help another vehicle, according to California Highway Patrol.

CHP got reports of a crash around 10:30 p.m. along Interstate 205 near the North MacArthur Drive offramp. There was a vehicle stopped on the right shoulder and another vehicle pulled over in front of it to help.

Two people got out of the vehicle and helped get the other vehicle running. CHP said the driver reversed their vehicle into oncoming traffic and was hit by a big rig. Then, the vehicle hit the car that pulled over to help, which hit the two people who were outside the vehicle.

One of the people died. CHP didn't release a name but said the victim was a 32-year-old man from Stockton.

It's unclear why the driver suddenly reversed the vehicle. The crash is under investigation.
