Unveiling of Gandhi statue in Davis draws protesters

The unveiling of a statue of Mohandas Ghandhi drew several dozen protesters to a Northern California park who question the Indian independence leader's past.

The unveiling of a statue of Mohandas Ghandhi drew several dozen protesters to a Northern California park who question the Indian independence leader's past.

The bronze statue, which was a gift from the Indian government, was unveiled at Central Park in Davis on what would have been Ghandi's 147th birthday on Sunday.

Several news outlets report the protesters shouted and interrupted speakers, including the Indian consul general from San Francisco.

One protester, Amar Shergill, said the community shouldn't celebrate a man whom he said has a history of racism and abuse.

Supporters said they raised money for installing and maintaining the statue because they're inspired by Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence.
