Elk Grove butcher advances to nationals in $25K meat-cutting competition

Elk Grove butcher Oscar Soto recently spoke to ABC10 about the prospect of moving up to the $25,000 round, and now he's there.

ELK GROVE, Calif. — One of two Sacramento area butchers who competed in a meat-cutting challenge in Las Vegas will advance to the final round — and there's a $25,000 grand prize at stake.

Oscar Soto of Elk Grove is among the 25 best meat cutters in the nation who will be competing for the top prize March 5 in Independence, Missouri.

He recently competed in a round with the top meat cutters on the west coast where they were judged on sirloins, filets and ribeyes cut from 30-40 pounds of beef.

Cutting meat for almost 10 years, Soto told ABC10 he serves the best food he can whether it's for the customers at his Texas Roadhouse or whether he's cooking for his kids.

"Yeah, one thinks about the money—but you're also cooking wonderful things and you want to make the best food possible," he said in Spanish. "My family is happy for me and they're wishing me luck that everything goes well."

The National Meat Cutting Challenge presented by Texas Roadhouse is part of the Meat Hero program, created in 2001, to recognize daily efforts of Texas Roadhouse meat cutters.
