Here's how to get a free ticket to a Tahoe ski resort

The funds from the Tahoe-themed plates also help fund environmental improvements in the Tahoe Basin.

The Plates for Powder campaign is happening now. If you're a Nevada or California driver, you can purchase a Lake Tahoe license plate and get a free ticket to one of 14 Tahoe-area ski resorts.

California residents can purchase Tahoe plates for $50. You can buy a Tahoe plate year-round, however, this specific perk only applies if you buy one between Nov.1 and April 1. The program has been around since 2011.

Chris Carney is the Communications Director for the  California Tahoe Conservancy. He says the sale and renewal of plates go to the California Tahoe Conservancy and the Nevada Division of Public Lands.

"This program is so great because all the funds from the sale and renewal of Lake Tahoe license plates come back to Tahoe to help support environmental improvement projects in the Lake Tahoe basin," said Carney.

He says the program generates hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, which are used to fund environmental projects in the Tahoe basin. This includes the creation of hiking and biking trails, watershed restoration projects, and helps keep Tahoe water and beaches clean.

"So in addition to you getting a chance to ski, it’s a great way to give back to a place like Tahoe that so many people come from all over the world to enjoy," said Carney.

This is a partnership launched by the Tahoe Fund and they work with Tahoe ski resorts. Carney says they're grateful to skiers, resorts, Tahoe Fund partners, and the North Tahoe Community Alliance, which helps oversee the project.

Carney adds the DMV's in both states make it easy to change to a Tahoe plate, and you can either keep your plate number or personalize it.
