Rain totals very spotty for Northern California storm

Some areas saw flooding rain, while others just miles away recorded light rain.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A potent September storm brought rain to much of Northern California between Sunday and Monday, but the amount varied wildly.

The nature of this storm was hit and miss with a cut-off area of low-pressure wobbling off the coast. Periods of rain would arrive with some embedded heavy rain and thunderstorms. If a series of thunderstorms moved over the same area, much higher rain totals were recorded.

One example is Davis receiving nearly 3" of rain over two days with most falling in a two-hour period Monday night. Just 15 miles away, Sacramento's Executive Airport only recorded 0.26" of rain over the same two days. At the Downtown location, they recorded 0.42" of rain for Sacramento.

Some locations missed out almost entirely with Stockton's airport getting 0.07" of rain and Modesto 0.09".

The main benefit of the rain was the impact on the Mosquito Fire area. Nearly all of the smoke was knocked down early Tuesday and locations near the fire as well as Truckee and Reno reported much better air quality. A rain gauge near the fire recorded just over 2" of rain between Sunday and Monday.

Many locations in the Coastal Range recorded 2-3" of rain as of Tuesday morning and many locations in the Sierra recorded 1-2" of rain.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are forecast for Tuesday afternoon and will add to the totals for a few locations.
