SMUD expecting to avoid power shortfalls despite electricity use at 'record levels'

Officials said SMUD is expected to avoid any power shortfalls, but they're still asking people to limit their electricity use during the heatwave.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In the face of rolling power outages at the direction of the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), Sacramento Municipal Utilities District (SMUD) said they're not expecting to run into a similar issue.

SMUD isn't part of of CAISO, and isn't required to participate in the rolling power outages that utilities like PG&E have been directed to do.

Despite expectations to meet the power demand, SMUD is still facing "peak alert days" and is asking customers to limit their electricity use during the heatwave.

Officials said customers are using electricity at record levels due to heavy use of air conditioners, and said that, if customers help with electricity conservation, they expect to avoid any power shortfalls.

SMUD said customers can help by doing the following:

  • raise thermostat settings on air conditioners to 80 degrees or higher
  • limit use of household appliances from 1 p.m to 9 p.m.
  • limit use of hot water and cold water which will lower electricity need for pumping, processing and delivery

SMUD said commercial and industrial customers can help in the following ways:

  • reduce use of lighting that's not essential for safety in garages, hallways, lobbies, warehouses and displays
  • minimize use of office equipment, supply and exhaust fans, circulating pumps and maintenance and repair equipment
