Sacramento director Greta Gerwig opens up about success of 'Barbie' as it moves to streaming

"I'm a Sacramento girl. Always will be," Greta Gerwig said, adding she didn't think her 2023 blockbuster 'Barbie' would be as big as it was.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Barbie movie heads home to MAX streaming next week and Greta Gerwig will likely head home for the holidays to Sacramento.

"I want to go to the Sacramento Railroad Museum because my kid is going to really love it," she told me on the ABC10 Morning News. "I can't wait to bring him there."

Greta's first breakout hit was Lady Bird, an almost autobiographical take on her life as a high schooler headed off to college in New York City. In the movie, despite lamenting and loathing Sacramento, Lady Bird gets homesick immediately.

The same still rings true for Greta.  "I'm a Sacramento girl.  Always will be," she told me. "I miss it!"

Three things you should know that landed during our recent conversation:

1) Greta didn't think Barbie would be as big as it is. "I hoped it would be (a big success) and I always believed in it and hoped it would connect but you never think it's going to be this at this level. It is sort of beyond any dream you could have."

2)  I once asked Greta what the 6-year-old her wanted to do and she said to be a nun, because of how they dressed.  In this interview she elaborated on that:  "I also wanted to be a nun because they had a musical, 'The Sound of Music.' I thought I would enjoy being a nun in 'The Sound Of Music.'"

3) Speaking of childhood, she may not have played with Barbies as kid, but directing this movie took her back to her elementary school days. "What I do now feels the closest to being a kid. I get to create these imaginary worlds and live inside them and that feels basically what it was like when I was playing make-believe on the playground at Phoebe Hearst."
