2 arrested in 2021 Homewood killing of 70-year-old man

Danny Serafini and Samantha Scott were arrested in Nevada on suspicion of shooting and killing Robert Gary Spohr and injuring his wife.

HOMEWOOD, Calif. — Two people were arrested Friday in connection to killing a 70-year-old man and attempting to kill his wife in North Lake Tahoe in June 2021.

Danny Serafini and Samantha Scott were arrested in Nevada on suspicion of shooting and killing Robert Gary Spohr and shooting and injuring Spohr's wife, Wendy Wood, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

Serafini, a 49-year-old, was arrested in Winnemucca and Scott, a 33-year-old, was arrested in Las Vegas. The sheriff's office said both Serafini and Scott knew each other and the victims. According to public records, Serafini was the son-in-law of the victims.

Serafini is a former MLB baseball pitcher. He was drafted in the first round of the 1992 MLB draft by the Minnesota Twins, according to MLB.

Serafini and Scott will be extradited to Placer County.

"Since then, Placer County Sheriff's Office detectives have worked tirelessly over the course of the past two years, devoting countless hours of follow-up by detectives, along with the DA’s Office," The sheriff's office wrote in a Facebook post.

Case History

The sheriff's office responded to a call around 10 p.m. June 5, 2021, at a home in Homewood, which is in North Lake Tahoe. 

Upon arrival, officers found 70-year-old Robert Gary Spohr dead in his living room from a gunshot wound. Wendy Wood was also shot, but she was taken to a hospital where she eventually recovered. 

The sheriff's office said that a year later, in 2022, Wood died.
