'This happened for nothing' | Family holds vigil for 10-year-old allegedly shot by another 10-year-old

Officials say Keith Frierson was the child shot and killed Saturday, allegedly by another 10-year-old.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — A family and a community came together to remember a young boy gone too soon.

The 10-year-old boy killed in a Saturday afternoon shooting was identified Monday by the Sacramento County Coroner's Office and Sheriff's Office as Keith Frierson.

"This happened for nothing," said Brittani Frierson, Keith's mom.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Office deputies say Frierson was shot and killed in a parking lot in the Foothill Farms community by another 10-year-old boy after the boy found a gun in his father's car.

Deputies say the 10-year-old shot Frierson once and then ran into a nearby apartment on Grenholme Drive. According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, investigators believe his father, Arkete Davis, hid the gun after the shooting by throwing it in a nearby trash can.

Frierson replays that terrible afternoon that allegedly another 10-year-old boy in her Foothill Farms apartment complex shot and killed her son.

"He said, 'Can I go ride my bike?' That’s the last time I saw my baby alive," she said. "Next time I saw my baby he was gone on this ground."

She adds her son considered the alleged shooter a friend.

"He was a neighborhood kid," she said. "We’ve been here for a little over six years."

According to the Sacramento County Jail's website, Davis is accused of three firearms felonies and being an "accessory after the fact." He is being held on $500,000 bail and is due in court on Wednesday. The Sheriff's Office says Davis was "legally prohibited from owning or possessing a firearm."

His son was taken to the Sacramento County Youth Detention Center and charged with murder.

Frierson's family has set up a GoFundMe to help "assist her in giving KJ a dignified farewell."
