Sacramento State students shocked after student was attacked, robbed on campus

Students are now being more aware of their surroundings, but they'd like for the university to make some adjustments.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Students at Sacramento State University say they're shocked a fellow student was attacked and robbed on campus Monday.

Sacramento State police said they're searching for six people accused of assaulting the man in broad daylight.

On Thursday, two former students visited campus to empower students. It was outside the Klamath Hall, where campus police say the student was attacked and robbed Monday around 5:30 p.m.

Police are looking for six suspects.

"I didn't really feel safe, but I know campus police is pretty quick with finding out who they are," said Bella Tucker, a student at Sacramento State.

Based on the information police gathered, they believe it was a targeted incident.

"I was very shocked because I see a lot of police presence. So I'm surprised they were able to get away with it and not being able to be noticed, especially traveling in such a big group," said Diego Godinez, a student at Sacramento State.

In response to the attack, the Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) organization united with students Thursday. They're promoting peace and harmony by handing out items meant to keep them safe.

"We want to bring awareness to that. We also want to help the students know that they are supported. We're handing out some flashlights, we're handing out whistles, some post-it notes if they need it," said Joselin Hernandez, a volunteer of the HWPL's Student Safety Campaign.

Hernandez is an alumni of Sacramento State, and she says the attack feels close to home. Students already have enough on their minds without having to worry about their safety.

"When students come to campus, they're coming just thinking solely about their education, their studies. They're not coming here out of fear of looking over their shoulders that something's gonna happen to them while they're crossing a hall," said Hernandez.

At this point, police say it's unknown if the suspects are students, but officers say the suspects took the victim's phone and ran away.

Students are now being more aware of their surroundings, but they'd like for the university to make some adjustments.

"I feel like (the campus) could get better cameras. And then, I see that the cops drive by every 20 or so minutes but maybe update on that, get more employees and stuff if they can," said Tucker.

Police are still trying to track down the suspects. However, officials say students can use the Hornet escort service if they have safety concerns.
