1 dead, driver hurt in suspected DUI crash in Nevada County

Police said the car was found about 45 feet from the highway.

NEVADA COUNTY, Calif. — One person was killed and another was taken to the hospital after a suspected DUI crash in Nevada County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 2 a.m. along Highway 49, north of Oak Drive. 

Police said a 2016 Volkswagen Passat was heading northbound when the driver tried to negotiate a right curve in the road and let the car drift off the right side of the highway. The car hit several oak trees while going down a steep hillside embankment until it stopped its side about 45 feet from the road.

The passenger, 23-year-old Kasey Patrick, was dead at the scene, and the suspected driver, 23-year-old Isabella Christmon, was taken to a hospital with major injuries. She was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol. Both people were from Nevada County.
