OAKLAND, Calif. — A judge has ordered deliberations to start over in the trial of two men accused of turning a San Francisco Bay Area warehouse into a cluttered maze where 36 partygoers died during a fire.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Trina Thompson excused three jurors Monday in the trial of Derick Almena and Max Harris on the 10th day of deliberations.
The judge did not explain why he replaced the jurors. The move came after a four-month trial involving involuntary manslaughter charges.
The 2016 fire broke out during an electronic music party at the so-called Ghost Ship warehouse in Oakland.
Prosecutors allege the men were criminally negligent when they illegally converted the industrial building into a residence for artists and held unpermitted events inside.
The defendants blamed city workers for not raising concerns about fire hazards in the warehouse.
