Person killed by suspected DUI driver along Highway 99 in Sutter County

Highway 99 was closed for several hours but has since reopened.

CALIFORNIA, USA — A person died after a crash involving a suspected DUI driver Thursday in Sutter County, according to California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened along Highway 99 near Sacramento Avenue. CHP said around 12:20 a.m. a man was driving a red Honda when he crossed into the northbound lanes and collided with a blue Honda Pilot. The driver of the Honda Pilot died at the scene. The person's identity wasn't released but CHP said they were 63 years old.

The driver of the red Honda had major injuries and was taken by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center. The man was identified as 27-year-old Jonathan Rodrigo Merin Quiroz. He was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. 

Highway 99 was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
