ELK GROVE, Calif. — Elk Grove will soon have a new veterans memorial, but before that, officials are asking the community to help finish the job.
The Elk Grove Regional Veterans Memorial will be a place to honor and memorialize veterans who have given their lives defending this country and our freedom and those who are living and are proud of their service and sacrifice. It will also provide a venue for Veterans Day events.
The memorial is in its second phase of construction. The Cosumnes Legacy Foundation raised $80,000 to fund the first phase of the project, but it needs about $500,000 more to build the rest.
The foundation is asking for people to purchase a personalized brick/paver or tile that will honor a veteran in their family to help raise the funds. "It will serve the veteran for years to come,” said the foundation on a Facebook post.
Pavers, according to the organization's post, are available in two sizes: 4x8 and 8x8. They will be installed in the entry walkway that leads to a symbolic bronze star plaza and flagpole.
Additionally, black granite tiles are available in three sizes – 4x8, 8x8, and 12x12 – and will be mounted on a “concrete wall surrounding the plaza." Prices range between $200 and $600.
The cost of the brick will "help fund the next phase of the memorial, so it’s crucial," the foundation explains on Facebook.
The only requirement for a veteran to be honored at the Elk Grove Regional Veterans memorial is for them to live in Galt, Sacramento, Wilton or Rancho Murieta.
Those who are not looking to honor a veteran in their family can also make a monetary donation online.
