Baby found dead in Modesto fire, 6 people injured

Stanislaus fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire.

MODESTO, Calif. — Modesto, Ceres and Stanislaus Consolidated Fire crews responded to a fire Saturday afternoon at a Modesto home near the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Laurel Avenue.

During the fire, crews found numerous occupants with varying injuries and a baby who died. The child was 18-months-old, and his or her identity has not been released.

Firefighters said the fire broke out just after 3 p.m. Crews reported heavy-smoke conditions. The fire was in a single-story residence and was an aggressive fire, according to the Modesto Fire Department.

Six people were treated on the scene for their injuries, and half of the injured were transported to hospitals in the area.

The Stanislaus Fire Investigations Unit is investigating the cause and origin of the fire.
