Suspect detained after hourslong standoff, shootout at Fair Oaks apartment complex

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office says no deputies were injured after a shootout with a suspect.

FAIR OAKS, Calif. — A standoff between Sacramento County deputies and a suspect at a Fair Oaks apartment complex has ended after more than seven hours.

Sgt. Amar Gandhi, spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, says deputies were called to the Hazel Ranch apartment complex on Winding Way around 10:15 a.m. on reports of shots fired. He says one of the multiple callers was the suspect.

Once deputies arrived on scene, the suspect allegedly shot at them, making deputies shoot back, according to officials. Gandhi says there were at least two separate instances of exchanged gunfire between the suspect and deputies.

Residents were evacuated from the area, though some stayed put, and negotiations began. Gandhi says gas was eventually deployed into the unit and the eventually walked out without a gun around 5:30 p.m. He was detained and taken to the hospital for a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the arm. It's unclear when he was shot or who shot him.

The man was the only person in the unit and no other injuries have been reported.

No details about what led up to the shooting have been released. An investigation is underway and is "not gonna wrap up anytime soon," according to Gandhi.
