13-year-old girl in critical condition after being hit by two cars in Rancho Cordova

The sheriff's office says the girl was in the crosswalk with her friends when not one, but two cars hit her. The second driver left the scene.

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. — A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after being hit by two cars Wednesday night.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office says it happened around 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Zinfandel and International drives in Rancho Cordova.

She was with her friends in the crosswalk when she was hit by a car. The driver pulled over and then moments later she was hit by a second car — the driver of that vehicle didn’t stop.

Kris, a mother and grandmother in the area, was sad to hear about what happened.

“It’s frightening that people, especially a 13-year-old, is out walking and got hit twice,” she said.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Amar Gandhi says deputies are looking to speak with the driver of the second vehicle.

“We aren’t sure if they knew if they hit her or not… we are not 100% sure if there is anything criminal here. We do need to speak to that driver,” said Gandhi.

He says technically it’s a hit-and-run but because of Wednesday night’s rainy conditions and the time of night, they aren’t blaming the driver yet.

Rancho Cordova police traffic cameras captured the incident.

“Something as innocent as crossing the street can prove dangerous. I don’t think these groups of kids were up to anything bad, just on spring break, having a good time. 9:30 p.m. is not absurdly late but these things can happen,” said Gandhi.

Kris says the situation is sad, regardless of the circumstances.

"I think people just aren’t being careful anymore, just so intent on where they are going they aren’t thinking about what they are doing. As for hitting someone and driving off? That I don’t understand,” she said.

The sheriff’s office says they know what the car looks like based on traffic camera footage and that it’s time for the driver to come forward.
