9-year-old crashes into CHP officer while driving himself to school

It all started when a CHP officer noticed a vehicle stopped in the middle of an intersection.

OROVILLE, Calif. — A 9-year-old crashed into CHP officer in Oroville Wednesday while trying to drive himself to school.

According to CHP – Oroville, it happened around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Grand Avenue and 4th Street.

CHP says an officer saw a gray sedan stopped in the middle of the intersection and – after being instructed to move – took off on a short chase that ended in a nearby dirt parking lot.

The driver put the car in reverse and rammed the officer’s patrol vehicle. Both vehicles had minor damage and no one was injured.

CHP says the driver was a 9-year-old trying to drive himself to school in his mother’s car. The child was sent to school after law enforcement was notified.

They hope it starts a conversation between parents and children about the dangers of unauthorized driving.
