Five Sacramento businesses burglarized in two-week span

Police are investigating if the burglaries at the five Sacramento businesses are connected.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Several Sacramento businesses are cleaning up and tightening up security after a string of break-ins over the past two weeks.

Sacramento Police Department is investigating after five popular businesses were burglarized over the past two weeks: V. Miller Meats, Compton’s Market, Taylor’s Market, Orphan Breakfast House and Selland’s Market Café Broadway.

Authorities say over the past week, three businesses, V. Miller Meats, March 6; Compton’s Market, March 7; and Taylor’s Market, March 7, were burglarized overnight. Some of the businesses tell ABC10 their safe and everything inside was stolen, while some stole undisclosed amounts of cash. At V. Miller Meats, the thieves shattered the front glass.

“They definitely cut the lock to get in through the back, and once they were in, they had a clear shot to the back door,” said Nick Ducusin, who works at Taylor’s Market.

Ducusin says he was the first one in the morning of the burglary, but he didn't realize what had happened until the other managers, who deal with money, came in.

“The managers after me that came in pointed out that the safe was gone,” said Ducusin. “It seems like they just came in and got the safe and got out. They only really wanted one thing.”

Sacramento police say the week prior on Feb. 27, Orphan Breakfast House in East Sacramento and Selland’s Market Café on Broadway were broken into.

Police are investigating if the burglaries at the five Sacramento businesses are connected, done by organized group or by several thieves.

Despite the string of burglaries, the businesses are open, but they are making sure it does not happen again.

“We definitely tightened up our practices and how we interact with people that do not work with us directly and how they come into the business,” said Ducusin. “You never know who you are working with and what they are looking for. Everything is replaceable and just glad no one was hurt.”

Sacramento police say all five cases are still open, and it is an active investigation.
