‘It’s museum meets mini golf!’ | Old Sac attraction blends mini golf and state history

Sac MiniGolf opened this month in Old Sacramento, and its owner went to great lengths to create a family-friendly attraction that takes people on a journey through history.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Located in the basement of the old Union Hotel building in Old Sacramento, Sac MiniGolf tells the story of Westward Expansion.

In the mid-1850s, settlers uprooted their lives in the Midwest and headed west, seeking their fortune in the California Gold Rush and the promise of new opportunity.

It’s a dramatic story that Old Sac visitors can now experience - through miniature golf!

Sac Mini Golf is 18 holes of mini golf in Old Sacramento,” owner Roman Porter said. “I really tell the story of Westward Expansion…through hand-painted murals and Hollywood-style set design.”

Each hole is a chapter in that history.

“I’m starting you out in the Midwest. We start in Independence, Missouri, and I take you all the way across to Sacramento,” Porter explained. “So, you go through the desert, you go through the prairies, the grasslands, the mountains, you come over Donner Pass, you’re through a fort, you go through the river, there’s a goldmine, and then you end up in the City of Sacramento.”

Porter hired local artist Matt Trammel to paint the murals depicting each location. Los Angeles-based husband-and-wife team Hollywood Haunter designed and created the Hollywood-style sets throughout the course.

“You could say it’s museum meets mini golf,” Porter said. “I built it as a low-tech way for friends and family to come together and spend time with each other.”

Porter’s 9-year-old son now plays competitive golf, but he first picked up a putter on a mini golf course.
