Buu "Billy" Ngo is a semifinalist in the Best Chef: California category

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento sushi chef is in the running for a prestigious culinary award.

Bu "Billy" Ngo, chef and founder of Kru, was announced as a semifinalist for a James Beard Award in their Best Chef: California category.

The award is a prestigious honor in the culinary world which is given to people who create exceptional food, food media content and better food systems.

"We are thrilled for the return of the James Beard Awards—recognizing the outstandingly talented leaders making their mark on American food,” said Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation. “As we’ve heard time and again from honorees, receiving this recognition has the potential to be truly transformative—and so, the Awards remain a vital platform for supporting and elevating the independent restaurant industry as a whole. Congratulations to our 2024 semifinalists and best of luck this Awards cycle!"

Ngo is a semifinalist in the Best Chef: California category. The category itself is one of five separate recognition programs for the awards. It recognizes chefs who set high standards in their skills, leadership abilities and make efforts toward a sustainable work culture.
