Child dies after fiery crash on Capital City Freeway

The crash happened Thursday on Capital City Freeway near Watt Avenue when the driver went off the freeway and crashed into a pole.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A child died after being pulled from a fiery crash in Sacramento County on Thursday.

California Highway Patrol said in a Friday update the child died in a hospital. The child's name and age haven't been released, but California Highway Patrol said she was a young girl under 10 years old.

The single-vehicle crash happened around 2:30 p.m. Thursday along the Capital City Freeway. A man in his 30s was driving southbound near Watt Avenue when he went off the freeway and crashed into a pole. The car caught fire and was quickly extinguished, according to the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. 

The man and child were taken to a hospital on Thursday. The child died in a hospital. California Highway Patrol said the man was taken to a hospital for a complaint of pain.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
