Event space and Mexican restaurant proposed for South Sacramento's former Florin Mall space

According to Sacramento County records, an Oaxacan Mexican restaurant along with a downstairs hall is being proposed for the South Sacramento area.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — An application recently submitted to Sacramento County shows developers are proposing creating an event space and restaurant in 22,000 square feet of retail space on Florin Road in South Sacramento.

The proposed 5895 Florin Road location, once home to a Sears Auto Center, currently sits vacant.

"I will have excellent and authentic Oaxacan Mexican food, provide live music and entertainment for all ages to enjoy. It will offer indigenous Latin Dancers show, host small parties, catering, events and will serve food and beverages like Margaritas, Beer and Wine," the application filed in early November states.

Submitted by Rodolfo Hernandez, the application also said the venue would provide more than 30 jobs to the community ranging from food service to event coordination.

Hernandez told ABC10 they are waiting for permit approval and then they will begin developing the proposed 'El Paraiso' restaurant.

"We're hoping to get up and going by the middle of next year. The area is kind of dead right now so it would be good to see it lively again," he said.

Once home to the Florin Mall, the lot has largely been vacant since the mall shuttered for good in 2006 and the remaining Sears closed in 2018.

Being a two-story structure, the applicant proposed an Oaxacan Mexican restaurant on the second floor, and the first floor will host weddings, birthdays and other private events.

"We will get a list of property owners within 500 foot radius to notify them that we plan to open [a] restaurant/lounge/night club and will be serving alcoholic beverages," the application stated.
