Early voting underway as California's Primary Election nears

County elections offices are getting ready to open their in-person voting sites.

CALIFORNIA, USA — California is less than two weeks away from its Primary Election and early voting is already underway.

Mail-in ballots across the region are being counted, and county elections offices are getting ready to open their in-person voting sites.

However, officials said, depending on your county, your in-person voting options could vary.

For example, in Placer County, there are no more assigned polling places or voting locations. That is due to their adoption of the Voter's Choice Act, eligible voters can cast their ballot in person at any one of the 29 vote centers in Placer County.

That being said, not all counties have vote centers, which are open for four to 11 days, including Election Day.

In Placer County and several others, vote centers open Saturday.

"Ballots have been sent out, everybody should have their vote by mail ballot, their voter information guides by now. We have about 11,000 ballots already returned for this election here in Placer County," said Ryan Ronco, Placer County Clerk-Recorder and Registrar of Voters.

In San Joaquin County, traditional in-person polling places will be open only on Election Day.

"If you're choosing to vote in person, make sure you go early and you give yourself enough time to cast your ballot. Keeping in mind, there could potentially be lines. We've definitely looked at where we have higher volume polling locations, and we've added additional locations to ensure that the lines aren't going to be excessive," said Olivia Hale, San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters.

People can also submit their mail-in ballots now throughout the county's 25 official drop boxes or through the U.S. Postal Service.

San Joaquin County also offers early in-person voting at their office in Downtown Stockton.

Primary Election Day is March 5, but Feb. 20 was the final day to register to vote in California. However, people can register to vote in person on Election Day and then cast a provisional ballot.
