GasBuddy: Sacramento average gas prices could fall below $5 per gallon by June

A spokesperson for the fuel data app GasBuddy said average gas prices in Sacramento could soon fall below the $5 per gallon mark.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gas prices in Sacramento have been down an average of 30 cents since last month, GasBuddy head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan said — and they could soon fall below the $5 per gallon mark.

The price per gallon in Sacramento could be less than $5 on average within seven to 12 days, De Haan said.

"That's where we could see it for most of the summer driving season," De Haan said. "So maybe a lot more $4 prices in our future as long as everything goes well."

Residents taking cross-country trips for Memorial Day weekend can find cheaper prices in states like Arizona, Nevada and Oregon.

California remains the only state in the country with an average gallon of gas over $5, according to GasBuddy.

"All the rules and special blends, the taxes, low carbon fuel standard, the cap-and-trade — there's a laundry list of things that Californians have to pay for," De Haan said. "That's why California is generally always the top dog when it comes to the most expensive gas."

He said the decreases in Sacramento gas prices could continue into July, though refinery issues that flare up almost every year could impact the drop.

"But if things go well, prices could continue modestly falling really through the summer," De Haan said.
