More than a dozen vehicles involved in Modesto crash

There were 17 vehicles involved, including three big rigs. CHP said there were only minor injuries.

MODESTO, Calif — More than a dozen vehicles were involved in a crash in Modesto Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol.

There were 17 vehicles involved, including three big rigs. CHP initially said 15 vehicles were involved.

CHP said there were only minor injuries. The crash happened along Mitchell Road, which was closed in both directions between Finch Road and Hatch Road. It's near the Modesto City-County Airport.

"The California Highway Patrol received a call just shortly after 5 o'clock this morning on Mitchell Road," said Public Information Officer Tom Olsen. "Our initial investigation indicates that drivers approached what appears to be a fog bank-- which is not uncommon when we traverse over some of our waterways here in Stanislaus County. Vehicles braked abruptly, some came to a complete stop."

According to the Modesto Fire Department, the Department of Environmental Resources responded to a diesel spill of about 100 to 150 gallons.

The impacted roads re-opened after an extensive cleanup process involving multiple agencies that went into the afternoon.

Officials with the CHP are hoping that drivers will pay attention to their calls for caution with more rain and fog in the forecast.

"We always encourage motorists to please lower your speeds and increase your following distance when you’re out here on these roadways," said Olsen. "Expect the unexpected. When you approach hazards like dense fog, draw your attention down the road."
