Still figuring out spring break travel? Here's what you need to know

Christie Hudson with Expedia says the first week of April is usually the busiest week for spring break travel.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Are you thinking of booking your spring break trip? Here's what you need to know.

Christie Hudson with Expedia says the first week of April is usually the busiest week for spring break travel.

She says people are visiting popular spots like Orlando and Las Vegas. Some are choosing to fly internationally to places like Cancun, Punta Cana, Tokyo and Paris.

"You want to book your domestic flights around a month ahead of time so there's still a little bit of time depending on when you're headed out this spring to get those rates in. If you are booking internationally, you want to book closer to two months out so it's the right time right now to go ahead and lock that in," said Hudson.

Hudson says this year looks busier because people aren't just traveling for spring break, but also to see the solar eclipse on April 8. It will bring more people to spots along the path of totality like Dallas, San Antonio and Austin.

Hudson says you can save money by leaving on a Tuesday instead of a weekend day. Expedia data shows it's about 15% cheaper to leave that day and the quietest day at airports across the country.

She urges people to try and take a morning flight if possible because Hudson says flights that leave after 3 p.m. are 50% more likely to be canceled.
