Bizarro April weather pattern has Southern California out of drought, North in the thick of it

An unusual April weather pattern has set up Southern California for drought-free status while Northern California continues to see drought intensify.

The Thursday update to the US Drought monitor listed more than 12% of Northern California as experiencing severe drought. Normally big winter storms often bypassed far Northern California leaving rain deficits of more than 15" in several locations.

Lack of snow also is impacting the region but recent storms have brought the snowpack in the state well above 60% of average.

Southern California had also, until recently, seen a similar lack of normal rain and snow, but a pattern emerged in April that would offset the early dry months.

At one stretch it rained six days in a row in Los Angeles, a new record, and added much-needed rain and snow to the area.

A normal pattern for California during the rainy season has storms develop in the Gulf of Alaska then moves south to Northern California, then Southern California. If a dry, drought pattern emerges it's often Southern California that will see early dry conditions, rather than Northern California.

Any reduction of drought conditions is a good thing, and it's been a big change for Southern California in early April.

There is a downside however, increasing drought conditions in Northern California are also happening where the large reservoirs are located so there is a missed opportunity for water supply in the state.

There is no major reason for concern, however, as most of the big reservoirs are close to their seasonal averages and there is still the snowmelt season to come.
