Weekend weather will see some major changes with winter storm moving in

A storm is expected to roll in Saturday morning and last through Sunday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — After an extended period of time with record 80-degree temperatures, the Sacramento region will see highs in the 50s over the coming weekend.

The storm is expected to move in on Saturday morning with rain coming first, and wind down later in the day on Sunday, with some rain and snow still falling on Monday.

Snow will start to fall in the Sierra Friday night and pick up through Saturday. The peak snowfall rates should be late Saturday and early Sunday morning. The region is expecting at least a half inch of rain to about an inch for most Valley locations. Locations on the eastside of the Valley and lower Foothills to about 3,000 feet will see up to three inches of rain between Saturday and Monday. The snow could have major impacts on travel over the weekend.

Friday will be a good travel day in the mountains, with rain and snow falling much later in the day. Saturday to Monday will see up to a foot of snow fall down to 3,000 feet and 3-5 feet of snow for the higher elevations. Chain controls are expected on Saturday to Monday with some momentary road closures for safety concerns, extreme weather or avalanche control. Rain and snow could continue into next week.
