90s are expected Thursday

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Temperatures will soar in Northern California Thursday to 90 degrees or warmer for many Valley locations.

Records for this time in April are hovering around 90 degrees and many locations will have a chance to top that in the afternoon. The record for the Executive Airport in Sacrament is 90 degrees. The forecast high for today is 91.

The wind should not be too strong today, allowing for more mosquito activity in the morning and close to sunset. Sunset temperatures will drop to the low 80s.

Temperatures in the 80s and low 90s are not often associated with danger, but inside a vehicle with no air conditioning can be dangerous. Temperatures in a vehicle will rise well above 100 degrees in 10-20 minutes and children and pets are especially at risk.

Temperatures on Friday will be just as warm, but it will also be windy with gusts up to 20 mph. Grass fires are a concern in the afternoon, with dry and windy conditions.

The temps drop to the low 80s on Saturday, but the wind ramps up to 20 - 25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph or stronger. Grass fires are a concern, as well as higher pollen counts and allergy issues.

Early next week, light rain is possible Monday evening and light snow, as well.

The spring heat wave follows an exceptionally dry winter that leaves California to face another year of drought and tightening water supplies. The Sierra Nevada snowpack, a key part of the water supply, is just 30% of the April 1 average, the date when it historically is at its peak, according to the California Department of Water Resources.

The Sacramento weather office said the outlook for mid-April and beyond favors a continued warmer-than-normal temperature pattern.
