'You're no artist' | Alleged vandal tarnishes $5,000 mural in Midtown

The building's owner said she put the mural up to put a stop to graffiti issues on her building.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A hidden gem of a mural in Midtown Sacramento was a tarnished by an alleged vandal.

On Sunday morning, Lucy Eidam Crocker found her $5,000 mural tagged with graffiti. She originally put the mural up to prevent graffiti, so she says the recent tagging has left her upset and discouraged.

“At this point, I don’t know. Should I get it fixed and then it might happen again? What are my options here?” Eidam Crocker said.

Crocker recently wrapped up making payments on the building after 20 years, and, all the while, she struggled with graffiti problems.

She said she was paying about $1,500 a year to have graffiti removed from the wall or the brick on the building. When she heard that graffiti artists likely wouldn't tag a mural, she made the investment. It's why the tagging came as a surprise to her.

She says that, while the mural was a bit hard to find, it brought a lot of joy to people who found it.

“You call yourselves graffiti artists, but you’re no artist. You’re out to destroy not only a beautiful mural like this but just plain walls and other things throughout our community,” Eidam Crocker said.

She says the artist will be returning on Tuesday to see how much the mural will cost to fix. She intends on meeting with Sacramento Police Department on Monday to discuss ways to prevent something like this from happening again.
