Meadowview Farmer's Market launching June 2, councilmember says

South Sacramento residents called for a renewed effort to launch a farmer's market in Meadowview, leading to the recent 2024 announcement.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento city councilmember Mai Vang announced Thursday a Meadowview Farmer's Market is set to launch June 2.

Years-long efforts by south Sacramento residents to get a farmer's market in Meadowview preceded Vang's announcement.

Meadowview community leader Mikaili Kamau told ABC10 last year he'd like to see a member of the community hired as farmers market operator.

"Let's not waste money and the opportunity to have a regular Meadowview farmers market by following the routine practice of endless planning and parades of consultants," he said. "This market should be planned, initiated and operated by Meadowview neighbors and volunteers."

A $500,000 grant from California's Department of Food and Agriculture is funding the farmer's market, Vang said, with the market being an important access point for residents wanting a fresh variety of food.

Grocery stores are not as accessible for Meadowview residents, making the farmer's market imperative.

"This is about improving health outcomes for our families," Vang said. "We're really excited for the community."

Funding for the farmer's market runs through 2027, with the Pannell Community Center being eyed as a potential location and community members being eligible to run the market.
