Bear captured at UC Davis caught, successfully released | Updates

The bear was first seen around the area between Solano Park to the Arboretum area, then later the Hyatt Hotel.

DAVIS, Calif. — 2 p.m. update: 

A young black bear seen on the UC Davis campus has been captured and released back into the wild, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) said Tuesday.

A bear spotted near the UC Davis campus Tuesday was caught and released by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The bear was first spotted near the campus Arboretum before dawn, according to the CDFW.  The bear was found in a tree near the Hyatt Place hotel, tranquilized and returned to the wild.  

"CDFW staff is happy for the positive outcome," the department said in a Facebook post. "It’s not often that we see a wayward bear in Aggie territory!"

8:45 a.m. update:

According to the latest warning from UC Davis, the bear was safely caught. It was removed from the campus by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife 

8:15 a.m. Update:

In an updated warning, UC Davis said the bear was last seen near the Hyatt Hotel.

UC Davis officials are advising students and staff to stay away from certain areas near campus after a bear was spotted. 

According to an alert sent around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the bear was seen on campus between Solano Park to the Arboretum area. 

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is assisting the university and on the scene.
