Looking to donate to help Stephon Clark's family?

Stephon Clark's death has touched the hearts of so many people and now, a lot of you are looking for a way to help out.

Stephon Clark's death has touched the hearts of so many people, and now, many are looking for a way to help the family.

Because of so much support, the GoFundMe for Stephon Clark founded by his brother Stevante, has received more than $83,000. GoFundMe says the campaign in finished.

But there's another local organization you can donate to, in an effort to offer support. Because Stephon was Muslim, the Council on American Islamic Relations [CAIR], started a LaunchGood campaign, to support Clark's children, Aiden and Cairo. Their goal is to raise $50,000 and has a deadline of April 25th.

So how do you know if the campaign you're supporting is legitimate? Here are a few tips, according to the Federal Trade Commission:

  1. Get detailed information about the charity, including the name, address, and telephone number.
  2. Never wire money to someone claiming to be a charity. Scammers usually request donations to be wired because wiring money is like sending cash, once it's sent, you can't get it back.
  3. Also keep a record of the donation and never give out your bank information until you've thoroughly researched the charity.
  4. Trust your gut, if you sense something is off, it's better to be safe than sorry.
