Man dies after setting home on fire in Sacramento County

The victim and five other people got out of the home safely. The victim had minor injuries, the sheriff's office said.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A man died after barricading himself in a home and setting it on fire Friday in Sacramento County.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said a man suspected of domestic violence was barricaded inside a duplex in the 7300 block of Arleta Court with several other people. Deputies responded around midnight and said the person had a knife and refused to leave the home. The person set the duplex on fire.

The victim and five other people got out of the home safely, according to the sheriff's office. The victim had minor injuries, the sheriff's office said.

"Our ultimate goal is a peaceful surrender. Come out peacefully we'll talk to you until you're blue in the face. We're not in any rush to make it happen and they did try, they did try but again we're beholden to what the suspect does. So, we can only do what they allow us to do and in this case, again, he kinda forced his hand and set the house on fire," said Amar Gandhi, Sacramento County Sheriff's Office spokesperson.

Firefighters with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District pulled the man out of the home and the person was taken to a hospital. The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“With fire blowing out of one, with a potential barricaded subject inside, with a potential weapon — a lot of dynamics for those first arriving crews, but they did what they needed to do. They were able to take into account everything that was happening, search searchable spaces because we know that there was potential for life inside, we want to make sure everyone is safely out," said Capt. Parker Wilbourn, Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District spokesperson.

The sheriff's office is investigating the domestic violence situation and the fire district is investigating the fire.

This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more.
