Caltrans expecting heavy traffic in the Sierra for holiday weekend

Officials recommend checking road conditions before hitting the road.

TWIN BRIDGES, Calif. — Hazardous weather continues in the Sierra with several new feet of snowfall still expected.

With snow falling in the Sierra and chain controls in place, it has both Caltrans and local businesses questioning the turnout for the holiday weekend and how many travelers to expect on the roadways.

For now, Caltrans is expecting heavy traffic. Saturday, parts of Interstate 80 were closed for 12 hours. While there were no incident reports as of Sunday evening, Monday has usually been the historical concern.

"If people want to rush home, they could be going faster than the conditions, and we have had experiences where multiple spinouts and what happens is the highway ends up being shut down," said Gilbert Mohtes-Chan, Caltrans spokesperson.

Caltrans said the California Highway Patrol usually closes the interstate where they want the tow trucks to help, and those closures can last for hours, leading to backups on the roadway.

Officials recommend checking road conditions before hitting the road. They also recommend packing chains, snacks and patience for the holiday travel weekend.
