EF-1 tornado touches down, causes damage in Oroville during storm

The tornado damaged several carports and shingles on roofs, even uprooting trees and snapping tree limbs.

OROVILLE, Calif. — A brief EF-1 tornado touched down in Butte County Tuesday evening, the National Weather Service confirmed.

NWS said the tornado happened around 5:40 p.m. in Oroville as a strong thunderstorm was passing north-northeast. It touched down in the area of La Palma Drive and Table Mountain Boulevard and continued north-northeast for two minutes before lifting.

The tornado damaged several carports and shingles on roofs, even uprooting trees and snapping tree limbs. 

The National Weather Service finished a damage survey on Dec. 20 in coordination with the Butte County Office of Emergency Management and Public Works. They said video evidence from an apartment's security camera helped confirm the tornado happened.

The tornado had a path length of .4 miles with a path width of 90 yards and maximum winds of 90 miles per hour.
